Arta: The Tequila of the Month

a bottle of arta tequila

a bottle of arta tequilaSan Francisco’s become quite a little hotbed for tequila producers, including Partida, Trés Agaves, Cabo Wabo (read an amusing interview I did long ago with rocker Sammy “I-Wanna-Make-Love-in-the-Sea” Hagar here) and La Piñata. I’m not sure it’s going to replace wine as the thing to make when you come into some money, but it’s certainly got some momentum.

The latest person to step onto the tequila scene in SF is David Fox, a former software entrepreneur who is sinking his everything into his tequila mission. Not only did he launch single estate–grown Artá tequila in the spring, but he’s going as far as building a 30,000-square foot tequila education center/gourmet restaurant/distillery on the beaches of Todos Santos come next year. The oceanfront of Baja might seem like an odd choice for this, but at the same time it makes perfect sense. The mountains of Jalisco certainly belong to the agave plant but many people think of tequila as the ultimate beach getaway. (Added bonus: Artá also gives away 1 percent of their sales to charities in Mexico.)

Tacolicious recently had a representative from Artá come in an lead us through a tasting and this month we’re serving a flight of Artá so you can do the same. Order a fried fish taco, close your eyes, take a sip and you’re on the beaches of Cabo. Or elbow to elbow with a bunch of Marina-ites wishing that’s where they were right now. Depends on the strength of your imagination.

Our Artá flight is $14 for a one ounce pour of each: the blanco, reposado an anjeo. It comes with a sangrita back and our servers’ deep knowledge. Can’t beat that.
